In a world where innovation continually drives transformation, the interior design and textiles industries stand at the forefront of a groundbreaking revolution. Imagine a reality where digital fabrics bring a new dimension to traditional textiles, and augmented reality (AR) seamlessly integrates with interior design, fundamentally altering the way we perceive and interact with our living spaces. As these cutting-edge technologies push the boundaries of creativity and functionality, the possibilities for elevating interior design and textiles to unprecedented levels are endless.

Home Fabrics recently hosted a launch at the Kramerville showroom of a brand new technology that is taking digital fabric interaction to an exciting new level. All it takes is a smartphone and tablet with the right software and users can enjoy viewing furnishing fabrics in a format that’ll revolutionise fabric selection. Why settle for a little 2D square when you can turn any surface into a digital surface to enjoy an interactive view of the fabric of your choice. Guests at the launch were delighted to be able to look at cushions, armchairs, drapery and more and see the product change before their eyes on the screen. It’s all possible with Glyph's state-of-the-art technology.

Glyph is effectively a combination of digital markers that can be placed on objects. Embedded in each marker is information of the digital fabric. These markers can then be viewed using the Glyph app on an Augmented Reality enabled device such as a smartphone or a tablet.

The innovative technology enables users to seamlessly replace textures on real-world objects within augmented reality. By doing so, digital assets can be directly overlaid onto physical products. Additionally, Glyph introduces advanced real-time deformation tracking, enhancing the overall realism of the augmented reality experience.

What this means is that when viewing the fabric on the device, if it’s moved, scrunched up or even if you put a hand under the fabric, the digital fabric you’re viewing will automatically adjust and behave just like the physical fabric.

The advantage of viewing fabrics using Glyph technology is that customers can browse and view fabrics in real-time in a much larger format than a fabric sample would allow. It’s now possible to see a full drop of a drapery fabric or even apply an upholstery fabric to an ottoman or armchair. The app allows for several fabric selections and customers can easily flip between the potential options to make confident decisions. It also provides thousands of fabric options and the ability to save favourites.

Of course this wouldn't be possible without high-quality digital assets. The digital fabrics viewed with Glyph are Twinbru's digital replicas of Bru Textiles' vast collection of furnishing fabric products. An exceptional digital twin of the its physical counterpart, these 3D textures are an exact match of the colour, design and tactile characteristics of the fabric and will behave digitally just as the real fabric would in your hands. Not only do the digital fabrics enhance interior visualisations and archviz, they also make digital sampling and technology like Glyph the leading edge in interior design.

Glyph technology is available in the Home Fabrics Kramerville and Cape Town showrooms. This is an opportunity for you to experience the app and see this incredible interaction with digital fabric in person. It’s a chance to ask questions and get more information while seeing how easy and exciting it is to use the technology.
