Trending in 2022

These are the colours and design styles that could be in the spotlight this year.

Times change as do seasons and years. Change presents opportunities for reflection, reawakening and reimagining how we live, work and play that lead to a reinvigoration of our spaces. Environments are intended to inspire us, make us feel safe and healthy as well as provide comfort so that we can live optimally and care for our well-being. When it comes to trends, they are much deeper than what’s hot right now.

Trends move and shift because they reflect the feelings of society on a global scale.

Designs speak to how the world is thinking, feeling and what we’re looking for to help us all move forward with positive energy. It’s not only about aesthetics, it’s also about communicating a message and expressing the intention and function of our spaces.

2022 is an exciting year because the trends on the rise are quite diverse and tell a story of hope following the pandemic. Let’s explore some key trends that can hopefully inspire your design journey for beautiful living.

Very Peri

Pantone made quite a splash by creating a new colour for the first time in the history of its Colour of the Year. Very Peri is a red-violet infused with blue hue highlights that displays “a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”

This unique shade makes for a great pop of colour in design schemes, adding zest through coloured glassware, art or accent furniture and scatter cushions. Very Peri also pairs well with other colours. Pairing it with white gives a fresh, clean look with a modern twist while combining it with pink creates a playful scheme that can be contemporary or romantic. Other colours that play well with Very Peri include grey, blue and beige, making the hue a great partner to neutral tones to bring in a bit of fun.

Play with Very Peri-like tones in Junani, Gavanti and Aksu fabrics from Designers Guild.

Curves Ahead

Bye-bye boxy sofas, hello curves! Curved furniture and interior accents bring in more sensual, softer shapes and they’re fun. This is not the first time curves were en vogue in interior design. The Art Deco period of the 1920s featured curves and then these shapes reappeared in a more chunky and funky iteration in the 1970s. Now, they’re back again as they express our desire for comfort and offer a soft, cosy welcome.

What works particularly well for curved furniture is playing with texture and colour. Velvet is a superb choice of upholstery for curved pieces with its touchable texture and the fact that rich and bold colours make a statement in this fabric. Saddle by Home Fabrics is definitely a fabric to consider for the sculptural wonder of a curved sofa or armchair.

Another texture that adds a different dimension to curved pieces is boucle. Some call it nubby, others call it fleecy but, no matter how you describe it, the cloud-like texture of the fabric on curved furniture creates a magical effect. It adds a touch of luxury to the design and boucle is surprisingly durable. The combination of curves and boucle is the ultimate statement of plushness, calm and comfort - perfect for 2022.

The Bold and the Patterned

Reminiscent of the 60s and 70s, bold patterns and vibrant colours have already proven popular in recent years but they’re a trend to continue watching. It’s all about bringing unbridled joy into spaces, being brave with a mix of colours and patterns and creating a look that makes people smile.

Artwork, rugs, and of course textiles are perfect vehicles for celebrating bright colours and patterns. With products such as Out by FibreGuard any cushion, ottoman, armchair or sofa can invigorate interiors.

Another way in which bold patterns and colours can come to life in homes, offices, hospitality or healthcare environments is with wallpaper. Wallcoverings can include the additional element of texture to transform walls into large-scale artworks that tickle the imagination or envelop inhabitants in a desired atmosphere. Because wallcoverings can be used on walls, ceilings, as backdrops in cabinets or even as the backsplash in a bar area, colour and pattern can appear in unexpected ways that delight the senses.

Although trends may be a reflection of a time, the core of great design and decor is being faithful to the vision of the owner. Whether it’s extreme minimalism, granny chic, industrial or mid-century modern, beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder for whom the aesthetic can continue to illicit joy for many years.

Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style.
— Billy Baldwin

Trends can certainly inspire a bold new look or create opportunity for consideration of ideas that may be the answer to merging different styles. Or one can simply be happy following a trend as is if it speaks to their individual taste. Either way, the breadth and depth of the possibilities of design means there’s a solution for everyone.

As you consider the trending styles for this year, remember that Home Fabrics can aid you in your creative process and our expert advice will ensure your product choices meet both form and function. Here’s to an exciting year of design!
